Water Resources Management and Policy
|
| Today's environment of rising population, dwindling fresh water supplies and adverse climate conditions make water resource management in the American West more challenging than ever before. The last remnants of the myth that fresh water is abundant and cheap are quickly fading from the public view. New strategies of integrative management, water markets, conservation and recycling are rising to replace the old strategies of "use it or lose it," and escalation of resource exploitation. Truchas Hydrologic assists special interest groups, community groups and municipalities in advancing water management strategies that fulfill the needs of multiple stakeholders while maintaining ecological and environmental integrity. |
Examples include:
- Devising a scheme to allocate municipally conserved water to enhance in-stream flows for the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico;
- Conjunctive management of a northern New Mexico basin's water rights in such a way that local renewable supplies were enhanced, expensive imported water use was reduced, and flows in local water ways were increased to the benefit of the environment and local agriculture;
- Creation of a strategic reserve of water rights and stored water dedicated to the enhancement of riparian environments, realized through water conservation and administrative incentives.

| Truchas Hydrologic also works in the arena of policy writing and lobbying at the state and local level on behalf of innovative water management solutions to today's complex water management challenges. |
